👋 Good morning!

What’s proper playoff-watching etiquette when you don’t really have a clear-cut rooting interest?

I’ve never liked the idea of cheering for the team that eliminated yours, and I certainly don’t think it makes sense to support any divisional foe.

Do you just hope for a good game? Root for storylines? Or just enjoy life without the stress of postseason anxiety?

…You’ve Got To Go Earn It”

Ben Johnson spoke to reporters via Zoom yesterday to wrap up the Bears’ Week 6 win in Washington before turning the page to Week 7 and the New Orleans Saints.

  • Kicking Competition? Not So Fast: Despite Jake Moody’s heroic performance after being elevated from the practice squad four hours before kickoff, it’d be a bit premature to expect a permanent role or change when Cairo Santos returns from the quad strain that kept him out this past week.

Johnson on Moody: “I think he knows the type of player he's capable of being. I think we all knew that when we acquired him. We're very, very happy that he's here and he chose to be here with us. That came through for us there last night. In terms of the future, we'll see how that all plays out.”

Johnson on Santos: We haven't had our meeting [Tuesday] yet on the state of the union here with all of our players and their injuries. I'll be curious to see how he's doing at this point. We’ve got a lot of faith and confidence in him, so whenever we can get him back, we're going to be in good shape.”

My, how far we’ve come since “Augusta Silence.”

  • Everyone’s A Critic: Did you take issue with Troy Aikman’s critiques of the Bears throughout Monday night’s game? It seems you wouldn’t be alone.

Johnson joked in an interview with ESPN 1000: “It sounded like from that game the other night, a few people weren't particularly pleased with how we were winning.”

Johnson again joked about the jab later, but ultimately downplayed it: “Maybe I just had [the TV copy] on mute. Listen — you want respect in this league, you’ve got to go earn it. That's where we're at right now. We need to go earn that respect from not only the rest of the teams in the NFL, but everybody. That's where we are.”

    Whiteboard material.

  • Tough S.O.B.: Receiver DJ Moore spent Monday night in a Washington, D.C., hospital for precautionary observation after suffering a groin injury. According to Johnson, Moore returned home on Tuesday morning and is considered day-to-day.

Moore seemingly winced after a hard landing in the first half but finished the game for the Bears, coming through with a pivotal downfield block on D’Andre Swift’s 15-yard carry that set up Moody’s game-winning field goal.

One thing is for certain after seeing the postgame locker room video posted by the Bears’ social accounts: Johnson has earned the buy-in and respect from every player on that team.

His “good, better, best” breakdowns haven’t fallen on deaf ears, and his energy after a win — even if it doesn’t match what we see five minutes later in the postgame presser — is resonating with his players.

That element of camaraderie is something no Bears team has really had since Matt Nagy’s first season as head coach back in 2018. Despite how that season ended, that group is still the only Bears team to win 12 games in a season since Lovie Smith was in charge.

The challenge for the remainder of the year is keeping the buy-in as the schedule gets tougher down the road. But first, they’ll enjoy a stretch of four weeks against opponents with a combined 6-18 record.

Nuggets 124, Bulls 117: Matas Buzelis scored 20 and blocked five shots. Josh Giddey added 25 on 7-of-14 shooting. But this game wasn’t as close as the final score made it look.

The Nuggets held the lead for the final 45:30 of game time and led by 24 late in the third quarter. The Bulls outscored the Nuggets by 14 in the fourth but ran out of time before they could complete the preseason comeback.

Return of the Golden Domer: Blackhawks F Landon Slaggert returned to practice on Tuesday after missing the first four games of the season due to a lower-body injury he sustained in the preseason.

Coach Jeff Blashill said yesterday that Slaggert won’t be ready to return for tonight’s game against the St. Louis Blues but could be available on Friday night against the Vancouver Canucks.

Officially Retired: Former Bears offensive tackle Charles Leno Jr. announced his official retirement from the NFL on Tuesday afternoon, two years to the minute he and his wife, Jennifer, lost their daughter, Paitynn.

In a statement, Leno said: “That day changed everything for me. It changed the way I see life, the way I carry myself, and most of all, it changed what matters most to me.”

Leno spent seven seasons with the Bears, making 93 consecutive starts at left tackle before his release in 2021. Leno continued his career in Washington with the Football Team/Commanders, last appearing in December 2023.
