👋 Good morning!

The Northwestern Wildcats — referred to on several nearby billboards as “Chicago’s Big Ten team” — got a coach fired over the weekend, and against all odds, it wasn’t their own.

In a matter of 15 days, Penn State coach James Franklin went from being unable to win the big game to being unable to win the small game to being unable to win any game.

Tough blow.

A Chance for Redemption

Coming out of last year’s bye with a 4-2 record, Caleb Williams delivered what should’ve been a game-winning drive against the Washington Commanders with 25 seconds left.

Instead, a series of unfathomable missteps and a catastrophic Hail Mary completely derailed what looked like the beginning of a promising season in Chicago.

Almost one year to the day later, the Bears head back to Washington but with a new staff and a renewed outlook.

  • Moving On: For Tyrique Stevenson, whose distracted on-field behavior directly played a part in the Hail Mary, this week is a chance to atone for his past errors. But the Bears’ corner is focused on one thing only: coming home with a win.

Stevenson on what tonight means to him: “Nothing. It’s a 1-0 game. I had a bad play. It is what it is. But I need to come out there and be the CB1 for this team and get the job done.”

That doesn’t mean the play isn’t still on his mind.

Stevenson said Wednesday: “It still hurts. Because at the end of the day I’m a football player and the last thing I wanna do is have a play that’s not so good and my name be memorable. On top of all the good things I did, it could overshadow that.”

  • A New Formation: After hyperextending his elbow in Week 3 and missing Week 4 before finally returning to practice this past Friday, Darnell Wright is expected to return to the lineup at right tackle tonight.

His injury replacement last week, Theo Benedet, will instead replace Braxton Jones on the line at left tackle.

OC Declan Doyle on Benedet: “He's continued to progress and get better. ... His mentality and how he approaches the game, I think it’s been consistent since we've been here.”

  • Injury Report: DT Grady Jarrett will miss his second straight game with a knee injury that has lingered throughout the start of the season.

DE Austin Booker and RB Travis Homer were full participants all week at practice as they work their way back from injured reserve. They’re in their 21-day practice window and do not need to be active for Monday night’s game.

Should the Bears decide to activate one or both players, they’ll need to clear space on the 53-man roster. Both are listed as questionable.

Despite being labeled a full participant in practice all week, K Cairo Santos is questionable with a right thigh injury. However, the Bears have not elevated Jake Moody from the practice squad, likely meaning Santos will be able to go.

Colston Loveland was also listed as questionable as he works his way back from a hip injury that kept him out in Week 4.

The Santos injury is worth keeping an eye on for a few reasons, but even assuming he’s able to go, it could still affect the Bears’ game plan tonight.

A Nor’easter hit Washington, D.C. over the weekend with effects expected to linger close to game time.

For those unaware, a “Nor’easter” is a big rain storm with heavy winds that east coasters have decided is special to their region and deserves its own name. It might be. I’m not Tom Skilling.

Regardless, if Santos’ kick power is at all diminished from his norm, we could see an uber-aggressive offense on third and fourth downs from 40 yards or further.

The Bag’s On You: The party’s over. Like they did so often in the second half of the regular season, the Cubs’ bats fell silent in Game 5 of the NLDS.

Instead of preparing for the Los Angeles Dodgers, they’ll instead prepare for a critical offseason with a massive decision to make on free agent OF Kyle Tucker.

Tucker on his future: “We’ll see what happens. I don’t know what the future is going to hold. But if not, it’s an honor playing with all these guys, and I wish everyone the best of luck. ... Really fun group to be a part of.”

Canadiens 3, Blackhawks 2: Two things are certain with the 2025 Chicago Blackhawks.

  1. They’re scrappier than the last few years.

  2. They’re not going to take any shit from anybody — Connor Bedard said so himself.

After a night full of fights and post-whistle scrums, Bedard said: “I like how we stood up for each other. [We’re] not going to take any shit, even if they’re a little bigger.”

The Blackhawks, however, committed 10 minor penalties in Saturday night’s loss. Tougher? Absolutely. But they’ll need to find a way to play tough and disciplined.

Bucks 127, Bulls 121: It’s not every day that “punches” are thrown resulting in an ejection in a preseason game.

Dalen Terry found himself tossed from the Bulls’ loss after attempting to hit Bucks forward Taurean Prince. Upon further review, it looked more like an attempt to grab Prince’s jersey.

Terry said after the game: “I’m a man before anything. I had to defend myself. … Refs made a decision and that’s just what it is.”
