Mystery Guest Day is here! Lock in on CHGO all day long as our shows will feature a mystery guest who won’t be revealed until he or she appears! Watch on YouTube

👋 Good morning!

Welcome to Chicago’s baseball equinox.

It’s rare for both the Cubs and White Sox to be playing at home at the same time nowadays. In fact, it only happens for one series this entire season.

That begins tonight, with the Sox opening a three-game set against the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Cubs doing the same against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The problem? The games all start around the same time. Tonight and tomorrow are night games on the North & South Side before matinees on Thursday.

Where’s the fun in that? Give us one day — just one day — for a day-night Red Line baseball marathon. Hot dogs and beer for breakfast, lunch, and dinner never hurt anybody.

Watching Tape

Former Bears head coach Matt Eberflus refuted claims attributed to Caleb Williams via his father, Carl, in Seth Wickersham’s upcoming book, American Kings: A Biography of the Quarterback, that the quarterback didn’t have help in the film room from his coaches during his rookie season:

“No one tells me what to watch.”

  • Eberflus’s response (via The Doomsday Podcast with Ed Werder): “In the development of the quarterback position, and really all my positions at the Bears, we always had daily coached film sessions. That was all throughout the entire year. So, that’s what I observed. That’s where it was.”

  • Williams added context to the quote back in OTAs, too: “Yeah. That was a funny one that came out. It wasn't that I didn't know how to watch film, it was more or less the sense of learning ways to watch film and be more efficient, learning ways to pick up things better.”

I know, I know, I know. I was hoping we could avoid bringing up the whole Seth Wickersham book story until the book actually comes out, too. But Eberflus’ comments are noteworthy in an otherwise slow time in Chicago sports. Bear with me this morning.

Here’s the deal: I don’t think Eberflus is necessarily contradicting what Williams said; rather, he believes he and his staff did an adequate job, and Williams just disagreed.

But at the end of the day, Eberflus was fired in November, and a majority of his staff was let go after the season. Even if he believed in his process, it still only resulted in five wins.

It also, once again, highlights the disconnect between last year’s staff and the roster, especially when taking into consideration the several players who asked for more accountability from the staff.

Maybe I’m on an island with this opinion, but it just seems like this is another prime example of Eberflus’s struggle to recognize his and his staff’s shortcomings — a trait that ultimately doomed his tenure with the Bears.

Considering the current roster’s appreciation for new head coach Ben Johnson’s heightened attention to and care for detail both on the field and in the film room, I don’t think it’s a stretch to feel that Williams’s side of the story is perhaps closer to how a good chunk of the locker room felt last season.

Okay? We made it through, and I promise that’s the last time I’ll bring up quotes from Wickersham’s book until the book actually releases in September…unless Shane Waldron wants to add his two cents.
