👋 Good morning!

Tuesday was a big day for us on social media as we hit 35,000 followers on Instagram and also passed 30,000 on TikTok. Shoutout to our intrepid social media manager Emma Alperovich as well our talented staff for keeping both places stocked with great content every day of the week.

Diehards on a Rooftop!

Forget Aerosmith. Nabbing tickets to the CHGO Cubs Friday 1:20 rooftop party on August 15 should be your top priority of the summer.

July’s occasional fireworks

OK, so I probably could have picked a better week to fill in for Patrick than early July.

Or any part of July, really. I saw someone comment on Twitter that July can feel like “summer January” and while I get their point, at least January has NFL playoff games.

In some cities, I’ve heard.

Any way, I didn’t really have “A Big Story” for today’s newsletter, so I thought I’d look at some of the bigger Chicago sports stories that happened in the year’s seventh month.

Marian Hossa signs with Blackhawks. July 1, 2009. The moment we knew the Hawks were truly going for the Cup … and probably going to win it. Hossa’s 12-year, $62.8 million will forever top lists of the greatest free agent signings in Chicago history.

First All-Star Game. July 6, 1933. Chicago was hosting the World’s Fair. A Chicago Tribune sports editor wanted to mark the occasion by getting the country’s best baseball players together for a game. And so it happened at old Comiskey Park. Babe Ruth hit the first homer in All-Star history and a tradition was born. But where will the 100th anniversary game in 2033 be held?

Disco Demolition Night. July 12, 1979. Anyone asked Pope Leo XIV if he was at this one? A radio station promotion led by Steve Dahl between a doubleheader with the Tigers resulted in a field-storming riot as crates of disco records exploded. The Sox forfeited the game and an infamous legend took its spot in history.

Mark Buehrle’s Perfect Game. July 23, 2009. No. 56 (with the help of DeWayne Wise) turned a normal Thursday matinee start against the Rays into arguably the greatest regular season game in White Sox history. Can’t wait to see what his statue looks like when it’s unveiled on the Rate Field concourse this weekend.

Walter Payton is born. July 25, 1953. Or was it 1954? Regardless of the year, the greatest Bear in history was born in Columbia, Mississippi near the end of July.

Cubs trade for Aroldis Chapman. July 25, 2016. The team with World Series dreams got their rental closer from the Yankees in exchange for Adam Warren, Gleyber Torres, Billy McKinney and Rashad Crawford.

Cubs acquire Pete Crow-Armstrong July 30, 2021. Oh, and in the span of 24 hours, Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and Javier Baez were traded away. Somehow it hurts a little less four years later.

White Sox trade for Geoff Blum. July 31, 2005. Not all free agent signings or trades in July have to register big at the time. The ‘05 White Sox’s “big” deadline move, in fact, didn’t really hit until the 14th inning of Game 3 of the World Series.

Cubs trade Ryan Dempster. July 31, 2012. And sometimes it takes even longer. After vetoing a trade to Atlanta, Demp was sent to the Rangers for a package that included a minor-league pitcher named Kyle Hendricks.

So far we’re tracking for the biggest story of July 2025 being the start of Bears training camp on July 22. But you never know …

No purchase necessary—just good vibes & great seats!

Twins 8, Cubs 1: Not the way to start a road trip. Cubs didn’t score until Justin Turner’s homer in the ninth — the 200th of his career. Porter Hodge was bad in the eighth, giving up three homers and six runs while only recording one out.

Blue Jays 6, White Sox 1: Tuesday’s much-needed rain put a much-needed stop to this one in the seventh inning. Ten straight wins for Toronto as they got for 11 and a sweep this afternoon.

Mystics 81, Sky 79: Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Angel Reese had a monster game (22 points and 15 rebounds in her sixth straight 15+ board game) but the Sky still fell short. Kamilla Cardoso can’t return from her Team Brazil duty quickly enough.

  • Big Night At Wintrust: Allie Quigley’s No. 14 will be raised to the rafters before tonight’s game against Dallas.

  • AR-1’s debuted: Reebok dropped Angel Reese’s signature shoe with a “Diamond Dust” colorway this morning. On sale dates to come.
