👋 Good morning!
Snip-snap-snip-snap-snip-snap.
Just like that, the Cubs are back atop the NL Central thanks to another stellar outing from Matthew Boyd.
Boyd, who signed a two-year deal last offseason, pushed his scoreless streak to 23.2 innings in last night’s win against the Royals.
And Cal Raleigh and the Seattle Mariners helped out the Cubs, shutting out the Brewers, 1-0.
Milwaukee and Chicago — not just tied for the division lead, but for the best record in baseball.
Yuuuup.

Camp Commences

Training camp is officially open and practices begin for the Bears at Halas Hall today. Ryan Poles, Ben Johnson, Caleb Williams and Grady Jarrett spoke to the media to open camp yesterday.
Here’s what we learned:
INJURIES & SIGNINGS: Jaylon Johnson, who was added to the Active/Non-Football Injury list on Saturday, will miss “a few weeks” with a leg injury sustained during offseason training. Johnson left last year’s Week 18 game with a quad injury, but Poles said he does not anticipate this new issue lingering long-term.
Braxton Jones and Colston Loveland are “ready to go,” but will likely require some sort of ramp-up period before going full speed. The team also activated WR Jahdae Walker and RB Ian Wheeler from the Active/Non-Football Injury list, waived CB Alex Cook and DE Jereme Robinson, and signed CB Tre Flowers and DE Tanoh Kpassagnon.
SETTING THE BAR: On goals for Williams throughout camp, Johnson said: “I told him I would love for him this season to complete 70% of his balls. So, you would like to think that over the course of practice, we're completing 70% or more, or that's hard to just magically arise in a game.”
Williams reiterated having a 70% completion rate when establishing his goals for 2025, but added, “Being the first 4,000-yard passer in Bears history. That’s a goal of mine.”
I don’t think there’s any reason to push the panic button for Jaylon Johnson’s absence quite yet. Missing several weeks is obviously not ideal, but he’s a pro and understands what it takes to be ready by Week 1 of the regular season.
The main concern is the unnerving unknown of what specific part of his leg is injured, especially when soft tissue injuries tend to not only linger for months but, as we’ve seen across sports and even more so recently, can lead to more significant issues down the road if not properly handled.

FIRST OF MANY: The winning streak may have ended at four, but White Sox rookie Colson Montgomery clubbed his first career big-league homer last night.
I find it incredibly impressive how far Montgomery has come since requiring a stint in the Arizona Complex League earlier this season to rediscover his swing. In 15 games in the majors, Montgomery is slashing .261/.346/.391. It’s not perfect, but it’s a solid work in progress.
✂️ HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! Today marks nine years since Chris Sale’s infamous jersey-cutting outburst in the White Sox clubhouse stemming from his growing resentment for the organization. Sale finished out the season with the White Sox, but was traded to Boston that December.
The following season, Sale finished runner-up to Cleveland’s Corey Kluber in AL Cy Young award voting. Sale finally managed to capture the honors, winning his first Cy Young with the Atlanta Braves after posting an 18-3 record with a 2.38 ERA last season.

Welcome to the party, pal!
