👋 Good morning!

Stadium chaos. Matt Eberflus updates…

We’ve just got to make it to Saturday.

Primetime Bears-Packers with a day off the following day to recover? Doesn’t get better than that.

‘The brains in all of it’: Why center Drew Dalman is so important to the Bears’ success on offense

Et tu, Luther?

Receivers Rome Odunze (foot) and Luther Burden III (ankle) will miss Saturday’s tilt against the Packers due to injury. Running back D’Andre Swift (groin) is also questionable.

That brings us to today’s Q&A. I asked for questions on Twitter on Wednesday. Then the all-important stadium news broke. Adam Hoge wrote a column on that yesterday with some interesting and new nuggets as well.

Let’s jump in …

  • Any chance the Bears bring in a veteran wide receiver? – Vic

Before tomorrow? No. Before the end of the regular season? Also no.

Ben Johnson said Thursday: “I've been really pleased with that room. I think we’ve got some young guys in there that we were really impressed with throughout training camp that ended up being on the practice squad. If called upon, I think they've done a great job soaking the offense in over the course of the season so far and being involved.”

Jahdae Walker should be active for just the seventh time this season. He’s logged only eight offensive snaps to this point. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Maurice Alexander elevated to the active roster for the first time this year, too.

Alexander, 28, is somewhat of a practice squad lifer at this point in his career, having only dressed in seven games with the Detroit Lions between 2022 and 2024. But there’s a reason Ben Johnson likes having him around.

On top of all of that, it’s just a little too late to add any sort of meaningful contributor to this offense. After all, who’s available on December 19th? Allen Lazard? Pass.

  • Is Saturday a “must-win” for the Bears when taking into consideration their remaining schedule? – Jonathan

Another great question from 2025 Bears Fan of the Year Jonathan Otten. Whether you have or haven’t already, make sure you vote J.O. for NFL Fan of the Year here.

There’s a great Brian Regan bit about what actually constitutes a must-win game. It’s why I prefer the phrase “can’t lose” in these situations.

Until the Bears absolutely need to win or their playoff chances are zero, I don’t think anything is a must-win. That said, if they want a shot at winning the NFC North, this is absolutely one they’ve got to have.

Winning Saturday would certainly take some of the stress off heading into Week 17, but the Bears will still control their own destiny within the playoff picture regardless of what happens this weekend.

  • When was the last time the league had such a large percentage of “good” and “bad” teams without many in the middle? – Ferrier

That’s a good point. Usually doesn’t feel like there are this many teams eliminated by Week 16.

The closest I could find was 2015, when the lowest playoff seed in the NFC clinched by two games and the seven and eight seed were separated by two games in the AFC, too.

Three weeks is also plenty of time for those standings to tighten up, even if it doesn’t change much of the picture from how it looks now.

  • How many times on average does Dennis Allen say “look” during a press conference? – Brodelicious

Look, I don’t keep track of things that’ve happened in the past. We’re only looking forward to the Packers now. That’s the priority.

That said, I’d guess about 10.

Small adjustments leading to big results for defenseman Louis Crevier

Canadiens 4, Blackhawks 1: Too bad Jeff Blashill couldn’t challenge to have that entire game disallowed.

It’s tough to win when you’re playing on your heels all night. The Blackhawks generated just four shots on goal in the first period, six in the second and five in the third. That’s simply not enough to win.

Frank Nazar scored his first goal since October 28th but that was just about it for the Blackhawks. Alex Vlasic had a goal disallowed due to goaltender interference. The Canadiens also had two goals overturned for being offside.

Hardly an encouraging start to the Blackhawks’ several-game stretch without Connor Bedard. They’re 0-3-0 since he went down last Friday.

The Name Rings A Bell: The Cubs are signing first baseman Tyler Austin to a one-year deal, according to ESPN.

Austin, 34, hasn’t appeared in the majors since 2019 with the Milwaukee Brewers. He spent the last six seasons in the Nippon Professional Baseball league, where he slashed .293/.377/.568 with 85 HR in 403 games.
