Professor Emeritus
Kyle Hendricks is reportedly calling it quits. The ex-Cub has informed friends that he expects to retire when the season ends, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.
Hendricks spent parts of 11 seasons with the Cubs from 2014 until leaving in free agency last offseason. Over 281 regular-season and postseason starts with the Cubs, Hendricks owned a 3.66 ERA and struck out 1,310 batters.
He was traded to the Cubs back in 2012 as part of the deal that sent Ryan Dempster to the Texas Rangers at the trade deadline.
Last November, Hendricks signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels.
2016: Hendricks finished third in NL Cy Young voting behind only Clayton Kershaw and Jon Lester that year, posting a career-best 2.13 ERA in the regular season before his legendary postseason performances.
NLCS Game 6: 7.1 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
Hendricks and closer Aroldis Chapman combined to face the minimum, clinching the pennant at home over the Dodgers.
World Series Game 7: 4.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
Hendricks put a championship on a silver platter for the Cubs. Regardless of how they got it done, it wouldn’t have happened without Hendricks’ effort.
Hendricks made his last start for the Cubs at Wrigley Field on September 28, 2024.
After leaving the game to a standing ovation, Hendricks said: “You feel all the emotions, man. I just feel so lucky and just so happy. … Just for the fans to give me that from the moment I showed up to the ballpark today, kind of celebrating me. Part of me hates it. I hate all that attention, but at the end, I know I have to soak in these moments. That’s what the Wrigley fans are there for.”
On the fans, Hendricks added: “They’re so special. They’re the best in the world. To play here in Wrigley Field, I’m just such a lucky guy.”
If this is it for Hendricks, it’s been one hell of a career. Maybe someday he’ll even earn a one-day contract to come back home and retire a Cub like 2016 teammate Anthony Rizzo.
And like Rizzo, his career won’t send him to Cooperstown, but he’ll forever be a hero on the north side of Chicago.
Yet, despite his best efforts, Hendricks never made an All-Star Game. I’m sure he’ll take a World Series ring and two top-ten finishes in Cy Young voting as a perfectly fine consolation prize.
INJURY UPDATE: Bears All-Pro Jaylon Johnson will undergo surgery after suffering a groin injury in Week 2, but coach Ben Johnson said Monday that there is a scenario where the cornerback returns to the field this season.
PEANUT PUNCH, MEET ‘THE STEVENSON SNATCH’: I can’t stop thinking about Tyrique Stevenson’s breakdown of his strip-and-recovery of Cowboys RB Javonte Williams near the sideline in Sunday’s win.
Stevenson said Monday: “Honestly, I just realized [Williams] didn't want it, like he didn't want the ball. They preach ball security, and I saw it. As he was looking for the block, I was like, 'He doesn't want it, so I'm going to just take it,' pretty much."
Pretty simple concept.
Ben Johnson added: “Talk about giving us a lot of life and a lot of juice right there. We didn't start the game offensively like we wanted to. Then the defense, second play, they were able to get a turnover. It breathes a lot of life into us, into that game and it gives us some confidence.”
