Good morning!
Well, we officially launched our big surprise yesterday.
Team-specific YouTube channels are on the way for CHGO. Our Cubs channel went live on Wednesday, just in time for domestic opening day today!
I'm caught between a rock and a hard place because I don't want you to stop reading, but I'd like you to click this button and subscribe to the new channel...
Click over, but promise me you'll come back.
Backing up Bedard
A no-call, while Blackhawks superstar Connor Bedard was mugged behind the play, became the ultimate turning point in Chicago's near-comeback on Wednesday night.
Bedard got tangled up with Devils defenseman Simon Nemec as New Jersey exited the defensive zone. As Bedard spun down to the ice, Nemec proceeded to jab and shove the Blackhawks forward.
The only penalty on the play came when Landon Slaggert came to Bedard's aid and returned the favor to Nemec. Slaggert was slapped with a two-minute minor for roughing, and the Devils capitalized seconds later to re-take a two-goal lead halfway through the second period.
Over on the Blackhawks' bench, interim head coach Anders Sorensen didn't appear too upset with how the sequence was officiated and accepted an explanation from the referees that Bedard was holding Nemec's stick, resulting in the no-call.
Maybe the officials were right; maybe Bedard intentionally held Nemec's stick. If you watch the replay, it's a real "chicken or the egg" situation. If Bedard doesn't get shoved down, he wouldn't have been holding up Nemec.
A no-call in that situation felt absurd in the moment, and the only penalty called coming against Slaggert felt like a slap in the face.
But the officials' slap in the face was nothing compared to Sorensen's when the interim coach failed to back up his superstar.
Asked about not blowing up at the officials, Sorensen told reporters:
"I just don't know what to gain out of it. They've made their call; they're probably not going to change it. You can try to talk to them in TV timeouts to get an explanation that way instead. Coming across yelling is probably not going to help the situation, right? Try to build a relationship and talk to them — I think that will go a longer way down the road."
An inability to become viscerally angry on the bench has become a recurring theme with Blackhawks coaches in recent memory. Nobody's asking for John Tortorella to shake things up, but Jeremy Colliton, Derek King, Luke Richardson, and Sorensen have fallen on the complete opposite end of the hotheadedness spectrum.
The Blackhawks need fire behind the bench. While it's not the sole reason they've been scraping the bottom of the standings barrel for the last half-decade, it's removed a level of entertainment that belongs in the game, too.
Defend all of your players, but especially defend your superstar. Bedard, who's received two ticky-tack 10-minute misconducts over the past two weeks, deserves the effort and defense from his head coach.
I know the focus this offseason is finding a capable winger to play with Bedard, but that can't happen until at least July. When the season ends in three weeks, Chicago needs to find the proper bench boss, preferably one willing to blow a gasket when their superstar isn't getting any sort of superstar treatment.
