👋 Good morning!

What happened to the Cubs?

Poor at-bat after poor at-bat, frustration boiling over — where is this team’s leader?

More importantly, who is this team’s leader?

It feels like the door has shut on the Cubs’ NL Central hopes — a wild thought considering they led the division a month ago.

Who’s going to step up and be the voice to get them back on track before they slip out of the NL Wild Card next?

It’s all about the future on the South Side. Less than a year removed from clinching the most losses in a season in modern MLB history, the vision becomes clearer with each passing day for the White Sox.

Last night’s win against the Detroit Tigers was no different.

  • HOME RUN HEROES: Ready to be shocked? The Sox lead baseball in home runs since the All-Star break with 42. Colson Montgomery has 10 of those, and Lenyn Sosa has five. Last night was Edgar Quero’s turn to join in on the fun.

Montgomery’s the big name producing loud results. He’s slashing a respectable .239/.306/.549 but still hasn’t curbed his high strikeout rate (28.8 percent).

However, he still leads the Sox in wRC+ (131) (minimum 20 at-bats), and his homer on Monday night was the longest at Rate Field this season (452 feet). I’m sure the Sox can live with his strikeouts.

Manager Will Venable on Montgomery: “He's got tremendous bat speed. It's a compact swing. With his levers, if he gets the barrel there, he's got a good shot to go out of the park. He's just a good hitter. Big, physical guy that's putting really good swing on baseballs right now.”

  • UNEXPECTED HELP: The White Sox claimed Yoendrys Gómez off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 10. Ten days and three appearances later, Gómez was designated for assignment and outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte.

The Sox selected Gómez’s contract before Tuesday’s game and called upon the 25-year-old Venezuelan to make his first career start at the major league level. How did Gómez respond? 5 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K.

    Nails. Adrian Houseresque.

  • AGE RANGE: Andrew Benintendi (31) and Luis Robert Jr. (28) were the only White Sox born before 2000 to tally an RBI. Quero (22) led the way with three, Montgomery (23) tacked on two, and Kyle Teel (23) and Curtis Mead (24) each added one.

I thought the most impressive aspect of the Sox’s win last night was how they managed to push each run across. Of their 13 hits, 12 were singles — the other being Quero’s solo homer. They drew seven walks, too.

Their brand in the second half has undoubtedly come from their power stroke, but last night’s effort proved the offense isn’t one-dimensional either.

Sure, they’ve got a nine-game hold on the worst record in the American League (44-76), but the product is getting better. It’s watchable. It’s enjoyable. And it’s a far cry from last year’s catastrophic disaster.

BREAKING POINT: The Cubs left the bases loaded twice in another abysmal offensive performance in Tuesday’s series opener in Toronto.

The perfect encapsulation of the Cubs’ latest rut? In the seventh inning, the Cubs pushed across a run and had two runners on with nobody out, trailing by three.

Due up: Seiya Suzuki, Kyle Tucker, Carson Kelly and Pete Crow-Armstrong.

Suzuki struck out in an utterly non-competitive at-bat, Tucker tapped a grounder to third and couldn’t beat the throw to first, Kelly walked to load the bases, and Crow-Armstrong struck out on a slider at the knees.

Meanwhile, the Brewers tagged Paul Skenes for four runs in four innings and beat the Pirates, 12-0. Cool.

Blue Jays 5, Cubs 1 (7.5 GB)

ROSTER MOVES: The Cubs activated RHP Javier Assad (oblique) and C Miguel Amaya (oblique) from the 60-day injured list ahead of Tuesday night’s game.

Assad got the start for the Cubs last night, allowing four runs on eight hits in four innings of work.

In corresponding moves, the Cubs designated INF Jon Berti for assignment and optioned RHP Nate Pearson to Triple-A Iowa.

ROSTER FLURRY: The Bears made several minor moves official on their player off day.

The big takeaway here? The kicking competition, if there ever was one, is over…

Cairo Santos’ 57-yarder on Sunday, plus his extensive experience at Soldier Field, made for a pretty easy decision for the Bears. Kim could be a candidate for the practice squad later this month.

Sure, Carm. Let’s get you to bed.
